Alberto García-Alix, guest artist at Estampa 2024

Estampa International Contemporary Art Fair celebrates its 32nd edition, from October 17th to 20th, 2024 at IFEMA MADRID, with Alberto García-Alix as guest artist. For this occasion, the photographer will present a conference titled Absence as a stimulus. A reflection by the author on how absence, its existence and its vital stimulus, influence and are reflected in his work, being a common thread and catalyst in his photographs.

In the author’s own words, “absence is capable of embracing an entire universe of emotions and meanings. Absence speaks to us and triggers a sentiment because within it lives a real and independent existence”. García-Alix talks about how absence is present in everything that surrounds us: in nature, in architecture, in objects and even in portraits “because something always escapes us from the model.” “We are born with the pain of absence. We come to light and we are already missing the maternal cloister. We beat in what is lost, in what is forgotten, in what is gone and in what is beyond that we do not have,” he adds.

Intercalated with the text of the conference, García-Alix presents sixty-eight images, most of them unpublished, taken over the last fifteen years. Thirty-six of these photos will be exhibited during Estampa fair in an installation designed and conceived specifically.

Likewise, within the activities of Estampa fair, the author will give the conference Absence as a stimulus at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th, at Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, with free admission until capacity is reached. The publication will also be presented this day, after the conference, a co-edition of the publishing house Cabeza de Chorlito and Estampa.
